Monaco 1 - 1 Lille: Diop rescues Monaco after Lille lose Nianzou
Monaco 1 - 1 Lille, and the point suited nobody completely. Not Monaco, because A. HĂŒtterâs side had 64% possession, 21 shots and 2.24 expected goals. Not Lille, because B. GĂ©nĂ©sioâs team led through Ethan MbappĂ© in the 24th minute and were still ahead when Nianzou Tanguy Kouassi was sent off in the 66th minute.
The result at Stade Louis II on Sunday kept Lille third in Ligue 1 on 15 points and Monaco fourth, also on 15, after eight matches. Paris Saint Germain remain top with 17 points, while Rennes sit second with 16. The margins are tight and the top of the table remains open, but this was a missed chance for both.
Match report
Lille struck first. Ethan Mbappé scored in the 24th minute, assisted by Soriba Diaoune, a clean early return from a 4-3-3 that had enough pace and discipline to hurt Monaco without needing much of the ball.
That was the story of Lilleâs match: limited possession, efficient moments. They finished with only 36% of the ball and four shots, but MbappĂ©âs goal gave them something to protect. Diaoune mattered too. His assist was Lilleâs major attacking contribution before Isaac Cossier replaced him in the 63rd minute.
Monaco had already been forced into an early adjustment, with Mathys Detourbet replacing Ansu Fati in the 15th minute. The rhythm was never smooth after that. Mamadou Coulibaly was booked in the 32nd minute for a foul, then HĂĄkon Arnar Haraldsson followed with a Lille yellow card in the 34th minute. The game became stop-start: tense, technical, but uneven.
HĂŒtter moved at half-time. Matthis Abline replaced Mamadou Coulibaly in the 45th minute, and Edan Diop replaced Denis Zakaria in the 45th minute. That second change became decisive. Diop gave Monaco more presence between the lines and, eventually, the equaliser.
Before that, Mathys Detourbet was booked in the 56th minute for a foul. Lille then made their first change in the 63rd minute, with Isaac Cossier coming on for Soriba Diaoune. Three minutes later, the match turned.
Nianzou Tanguy Kouassi received a red card in the 66th minute for serious foul play. Romain Perraud was booked in the 66th minute for dissent. From there, Lille were no longer trying to win the game in the same way. They were trying to survive it.
B. Génésio reacted by taking off Ethan Mbappé in the 69th minute for Maxima Goffi. The logic was clear: protect the lead, kill space, and make Monaco cross and shoot through traffic.
It lasted eight minutes.
Edan Diop scored in the 74th minute, assisted by Jordan Teze. HĂŒtterâs half-time substitute had changed the match, and Teze, who attempted 101 passes, completed 98 and supplied the assist, gave Monaco the route back.
Lille then shut the door as best they could. Maurits KjĂŠrgaard replaced Nabil Bentaleb in the 80th minute, and Matah Yondjio replaced HĂĄkon Arnar Haraldsson in the 80th minute. Monaco kept coming, but Berke Ăzer made five saves and Lille held.
The stoppage-time cards told the rest: Vanderson was booked in the 90+1st minute, Folarin Balogun replaced Mathys Detourbet in the 90+1st minute, Maxima Goffi was booked in the 90+2nd minute, and Berke Ăzer was booked in the 90+4th minute for time wasting.
A point each. Frustration shared.
Tactical read
Monaco started in a 4-2-3-1 under A. HĂŒtter: L. HrĂĄdeckĂœ; Vanderson, Sadibou SanĂ©, J. Teze, FlĂĄvio Nazinho; L. Camara, D. Zakaria; M. Coulibaly, A. Golovin, Ansu Fati; Paris Josua Brunner.
Lille started in a 4-3-3 under B. GĂ©nĂ©sio: B. Ăzer; N. Ngoy, T. Nianzou, Alexsandro Ribeiro, R. Perraud; N. Mukau, N. Bentaleb, B. AndrĂ©; E. MbappĂ©, H. Haraldsson, S. Diaoune.
The formations explained the game. Monaco wanted territory and repetition. Lille wanted compactness, release points and moments. For long periods, both got what they wanted, which is why the scoreline sat awkwardly between dominance and danger.
Monacoâs right side was the most productive zone. Vanderson had four shots, two on target, three key passes, three tackles and seven duels won. Teze attempted 101 passes, completed 98, and provided the assist for Diop. That flank became Monacoâs main route after the red card, especially as Lille dropped deeper.
A. Golovin also carried creative weight. He produced four key passes and had two shots on goal. L. Camara gave Monaco control in midfield, drawing six fouls and winning seven of nine duels. The problem was not access. It was conversion.
That is where the numbers sting for Monaco. They had 13 shots inside the box, eight from outside it, six on target and 2.24 expected goals. One goal from that volume is not enough at home in a top-four match.
Lilleâs plan was thinner but more efficient. Ethan MbappĂ© had one shot on target and scored. Soriba Diaoune made one key pass and it became the assist. After Nianzou Tanguy Kouassiâs red card in the 66th minute, B. GĂ©nĂ©sioâs side stopped pretending this could be anything other than resistance.
Berke Ăzerâs five saves kept Lille alive. Romain Perraud won eight of 12 duels. N. Ngoy won four of five. Alexsandro Ribeiro won all three of his duels. It was not pretty, but it was valuable.

What it means
Lille leave Monaco still third, with 15 points from eight matches, four wins, three draws and one defeat. That is a strong base, but this was a lead lost after a red card and a long spell under pressure.
Monaco remain fourth, also on 15 points, and unbeaten at home in the league with two wins and two draws at Stade Louis II. Yet HĂŒtter will know the issue: control is not the same as punishment. Monaco had the ball, the shots, the expected goals and the extra man. They still needed Diop off the bench to rescue a draw.
For the Ligue 1 race, the draw helps Paris Saint Germain and Rennes more than anyone. It also leaves the chasing group compressed, with Lyon, Paris FC, Lens and Marseille still close enough to make every dropped point feel expensive.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1âs weekend picture, Toulouse had their own frustration in a goalless draw, covered here: Toulouse 0 - 0 Estac Troyes: Troyes take the point, Toulouse take the frustration.
Next step for both Monaco and Lille is simple: keep the structure, fix the details. For Monaco, that means sharper finishing. For Lille, it means managing the final half-hour better when the match state turns against them.
