Manchester City went to Selhurst Park last night and made the table speak early. Crystal Palace 1 - 4 Manchester City, City on six points from two matches, Palace bottom after two defeats, with six goals conceded already.

Guardiola’s side did not need chaos. They needed control, and they had it: 72% possession, 779 passes, 18 shots, nine on target. The package was clear. City kept Palace pinned, moved the ball with patience, then let their match-winners do the damage.

Erling Haaland scored in the 17th minute, assisted by Antoine Semenyo, and that changed the match before Palace had found any rhythm. Rayan Cherki was then the player who broke it open after the interval. He scored in the 54th minute from Phil Foden’s assist, Palace got one back through a Gianluigi Donnarumma own goal in the 56th minute, then Cherki scored again in the 59th minute, this time assisted by Joško Gvardiol. Haaland finished the job in the 84th minute, with Foden again providing the assist.

The formations told part of the story. Palace wanted bodies behind the ball, width from Khalaili and Mitchell, and enough runners around Strand Larsen to make City defend transitions. But City’s double pivot gave them cleaner circulation, and the three behind Haaland kept finding pockets between Palace’s midfield and defence.

The first goal in the 17th minute mattered because it forced Palace to play a match they did not want. Semenyo supplied Haaland, Haaland scored, and from there City could manage risk. Palace had only 28% of the ball and one shot on target. That is not a platform for an upset against this team.

Cherki’s yellow card in the 33rd minute was the only mark against a performance that otherwise felt like a statement. He finished with two goals, three shots on target, three key passes and an 8.7 rating. This was not decoration. It was end product. He scored in the 54th minute, then after Donnarumma’s own goal in the 56th minute briefly gave Palace a route back, Cherki scored again in the 59th minute. Foden’s role was just as important. Two assists, three key passes, constant availability between the lines. He assisted Cherki in the 54th minute and Haaland in the 84th minute. When City are this secure behind the ball and Foden is connecting the final third, opponents need near-perfect defending. Palace were nowhere near that.

Why City controlled it

City’s control came from volume and accuracy. Rúben Dias completed 106 passes from 106 attempted, while Marc Guéhi completed 106 from 108. That is not just sterile possession. It meant City could reset attacks, prevent Palace from building momentum, and keep the home side running towards their own goal.

Elliot Anderson also gave Guardiola balance before being substituted in the 82nd minute. He had 98 passes, five tackles, three interceptions and eight duels won. His yellow card in the 55th minute did not derail him. City needed someone to stop Palace’s counters at source, and Anderson did that job.

Gvardiol’s assist for Cherki in the 59th minute showed the value of City’s left side. He was withdrawn in the 75th minute for Mateo Kovačić, but by then the key damage was done.
