Real Sociedad 1-1 Lyon: Tolisso Cancels Out Óskarsson as Europa League Points Are Split

Real Sociedad and Lyon took a point each at Anoeta Stadium on Thursday, a 1-1 draw that helped Paulo Fonseca’s side protect their position in the UEFA Europa League play-off places and left P. Matarazzo’s team still searching for a first home win of this league phase.

Neither side finished the night with the job done, but Lyon will take the away point. They trailed after Orri Steinn Óskarsson scored in the 28th minute from Ander Barrenetxea’s assist, then found their answer when Corentin Tolisso scored in the 54th minute from Tanner Tessmann’s assist. That was the match: tight, tense, never clean, and increasingly spiky after the interval.

Real Sociedad had the better expected goals figure, 1.4 to Lyon’s 1.05, but Lyon had more of the ball, more passes, and enough control through Tessmann and Tolisso to avoid being dragged into a purely Basque rhythm. The point leaves Lyon 13th on seven points after four matches, inside the Europa League play-off places. Real Sociedad sit 20th on five points, also in the play-off bracket, but with less margin.

How the Match Turned

Matarazzo set Real Sociedad up in a 4-4-2: Unai Marrero in goal; J. Aramburu, Zubeldia, M. Sarr and Sergio Gómez across the back; Barrenetxea, Jon Gorrotxategi, Y. Herrera and Gonçalo Guedes in midfield; Mikel Oyarzabal and O. Óskarsson as the front two.

Fonseca went with Lyon in a 4-3-3: D. Greif in goal; Z. Athekame, F. Bacher, R. Kluivert and Abner in defence; M. Bidstrup, T. Tessmann and C. Tolisso in midfield; K. Boudache, K. Merah and Keito Nakamura in attack.

The opening half belonged more to Real Sociedad’s vertical threat than to Lyon’s possession. Barrenetxea was the key figure: not always tidy, not always efficient, but direct enough to unsettle Lyon’s right side. His assist for Óskarsson in the 28th minute gave La Real the lead and confirmed the value of Matarazzo’s front pairing. Óskarsson did not need volume to matter. He finished with two shots, one on target, one goal, and seven duels won from ten. That is centre-forward economy.

Lyon’s first note of frustration came when Kail Boudache was booked in the 38th minute for a foul. By then, Fonseca’s side had the ball but not enough authority in the last third. Keito Nakamura was involved, registering three key passes before going off later, but Lyon’s front line was also caught offside too often, with the team finishing on four offsides.

Matarazzo changed at the break, sending Jon Martín on for Mamadou Sarr in the 45th minute. It looked like an attempt to freshen the defensive line and preserve the lead. Instead, Lyon came out with more control, and the midfield pairing that mattered most took over.

Tessmann supplied Tolisso in the 54th minute, and Tolisso scored. No need to dress it up beyond the facts: Lyon’s most influential player delivered the equaliser. He had four shots, three on target, won eight of 14 duels, drew six fouls and gave Lyon a route back into the match when it was drifting towards a damaging away defeat.

The Midfield Contract

The core of Lyon’s result was not romance; it was the midfield package. Tessmann completed 52 accurate passes from 57 attempted, added the assist, made two tackles, and kept Lyon moving when Real Sociedad tried to turn the game into a series of duels. Tolisso gave the move its final value, but Tessmann gave it structure.

Real Sociedad’s midfield worked harder than it flowed. Jon Gorrotxategi made four interceptions, Yangel Herrera won six of 11 duels, and Barrenetxea created two chances before his night turned more ragged. He was booked for dissent in the 77th minute and replaced by Pablo Marín in the 79th minute. Óskarsson also went off in the 79th minute, with Luka Sučić coming on.

The timing mattered. Sociedad had already sent Job Ochieng on for Gonçalo Guedes in the 66th minute, five minutes after Guedes had been booked for persistent infringement in the 61st minute. Ochieng gave them energy, won three of four duels and completed a dribble, but Real Sociedad lost the clean outlet they had found earlier through Barrenetxea and Óskarsson.

Fonseca’s bench was more conservative in tone. Julien Duranville replaced Keito Nakamura in the 67th minute, then Noah Teye Nartey came on for Mads Bidstrup in the 75th minute. Duranville brought running but also received a yellow card in the 82nd minute for a foul. In the 89th minute, Nicolás Tagliafico replaced Kail Boudache and Alejandro Gomes Rodríguez replaced Khalis Merah, moves that helped Lyon close the game rather than chase it.

Cards, Friction and Control

The final half-hour became a referee-management exercise as much as a tactical one. Anastasios Papapetrou had to deal with a game that grew increasingly broken.

Kail Boudache was booked in the 38th minute. Gonçalo Guedes followed in the 61st minute. Ander Barrenetxea saw yellow in the 77th minute. Julien Duranville was booked in the 82nd minute. Dominik Greif was shown yellow in the 87th minute for time wasting. Yangel Herrera was booked in the 89th minute. Abner Vinicius joined the list in the 90+1st minute for an argument.

No red cards. Plenty of edge.

Real Sociedad committed 23 fouls to Lyon’s 10, a striking imbalance and one of the reasons the hosts could not build sustained pressure after conceding. Lyon, meanwhile, did enough game management to survive without ever fully killing the contest. Greif made three saves. Marrero also made three. Both goalkeepers were busy enough to matter, not busy enough to dominate the story.

What It Means

For Lyon, this was a useful away point, not a statement. Fonseca’s team remain 13th with seven points from four Europa League matches, two wins, one draw and one defeat, with six goals scored and seven conceded. The defensive record still needs work, but the route into the play-off round is open.

For Real Sociedad, the frustration is sharper. Matarazzo’s side are 20th with five points, and their home record in the league phase now reads no wins, one draw and one defeat. The broader picture is still alive because they have scored nine in four matches and carry a goal difference of +5, but this was a night when a lead at Anoeta became only a point.

The French angle is also getting crowded. Marseille’s win in Germany has changed the mood around their own campaign, covered here: Gouiri Strikes Late as Marseille Stun Leverkusen to Revive Europa League Hopes. Lyon’s next domestic test also comes quickly, with more on that in Stade Brestois 29 vs Lyon Preview: Lyon Chase the Top, Brest Test the Package.

For Real Sociedad, the next Europa League fixtures now carry less comfort. For Lyon, the message is simple: keep Tolisso and Tessmann fit, keep the structure, and the play-off route stays very much in their hands.
