Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United: Rogers and Palmer keep Alonso’s side in the Champions League places
Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, a clean, controlled result that says plenty about where both clubs are right now.
Xabi Alonso’s side moved to 16 points from nine Premier League matches and stayed 4th. Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, remain 17th with seven points from nine. This fixture has carried title-race weight for decades. This one felt different: Chelsea looked like a team with a plan, United like a side trying to survive moments.
Morgan Rogers scored in the 50th minute, assisted by Romeo Lavia. Cole Palmer made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 64th minute. In between, the game broke open: VAR confirmed a Chelsea penalty in the 61st minute, Lisandro MartĂnez was shown a red card in the 63rd minute, and United never recovered.
The match turned after the break
United had a flashpoint before Chelsea took control. Matheus Cunha had a goal cancelled after VAR review in the 34th minute. That was the warning for Chelsea, who had more of the ball but still had to respect United’s threat through Cunha, Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes.
Then came the decisive run.
Rogers scored in the 50th minute after Lavia’s assist. No fuss, no need to dress it up. It was the goal that changed the temperature of the afternoon because Chelsea could then play on their terms: more possession, cleaner spacing, more pressure on United’s back line.
Carrick made his first move in the 58th minute, with Kobbie Mainoo replacing Carlos Baleba. One minute later, Lisandro MartĂnez was booked for a foul. VAR then confirmed a Chelsea penalty in the 61st minute, with Wesley Fofana the player listed in the incident.
MartĂnez was sent off in the 63rd minute. Palmer scored the penalty in the 64th minute.
Deal done, in effect.
Harry Maguire was booked in the 65th minute, and United’s discipline went with the scoreline. Mainoo was booked in the 70th minute, Bryan Mbeumo in the 81st minute for not retreating, and Joshua Zirkzee in the 86th minute for a foul. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders was also booked in the 90+3rd minute for time wasting.
There was still one more VAR intervention: EstĂŞvĂŁo had a goal cancelled in the 71st minute. Chelsea were not short of chances.
Lineups and systems
Both managers used a 4-2-3-1.
Chelsea, coached by Xabi Alonso:
M. Penders; Joshua Kofi Acheampong, W. Fofana, L. Colwill, M. Palestra; R. Lavia, M. Caicedo; EstĂŞvĂŁo, C. Palmer, M. Rogers; Pedro Neto.
Manchester United, coached by Michael Carrick:
S. Lammens; L. Yoro, H. Maguire, Lisandro MartĂnez, Diogo Dalot; Andrey Santos, C. Baleba; A. Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha; B. Mbeumo.
Alonso’s double pivot mattered. Lavia was central to everything: 72 passes, two key passes, five tackles, four interceptions, seven duels won, and the assist for Rogers in the 50th minute. Moises Caicedo gave Chelsea balance next to him, completing 54 accurate passes and winning six duels before Danny Welbeck replaced him in the 87th minute.
Chelsea’s front four had variety. Rogers gave them punch from the left side of the attacking line, Palmer found pockets, Estêvão kept attacking and shooting, and Pedro Neto gave the front line width before Valentin Barco replaced him in the 87th minute.
United’s 4-2-3-1 had moments, especially through Amad Diallo, who had four shots, two on target, and completed both of his dribbles. Bruno Fernandes created three chances. But United could not sustain pressure, and once MartĂnez went off, Carrick’s structure became damage limitation.
Why Rogers and Lavia mattered
Rogers was the match’s sharpest player. He scored in the 50th minute, had three key passes, won eight of his 13 duels, completed two of his three dribbles, and drew three fouls. That is not just end product. That is territory.
Lavia was the connector. Chelsea had 59% possession and 561 total passes, but the volume only mattered because Lavia gave it direction. His assist for Rogers was the cleanest expression of Chelsea’s control, but his defensive work was just as important. United wanted transitions. Lavia kept breaking the first pass that would have started them.
Palmer did what Palmer does. He scored the penalty in the 64th minute, created three chances, drew four fouls, won eight duels, and played until Geovany Quenda replaced him in the 90+7th minute. Chelsea did not need him to carry the entire attack. That is the bigger point for Alonso.

S. Lammens kept United in it longer than the scoreline suggests, making eight saves. Without him, the result could have been heavier. Penders made three saves for Chelsea and kept the clean sheet, although his 90+3rd-minute yellow card was a late blemish.
What it means
Chelsea stay in the Champions League places, 4th with 16 points. Alonso’s side are still not flawless, but this was a mature win: pressure, patience, control, then punishment.
United remain 17th, level on seven points with 18th-placed Crystal Palace but ahead of them on goal difference. That is the company United are keeping right now.
Carrick has bigger issues than one red card. United committed 20 fouls, had one player sent off, and ended the game chasing shadows. The next fixtures now become about stabilising, not style.
Chelsea can look up. United have to look over their shoulder.
