Lens 2-1 Paris FC: Thauvin and Hazard flip the match at Bollaert

Lens beat Paris FC 2-1 on October 24 at Stade Bollaert-Delelis in Ligue 1, and the result matters. D. Toppmöller’s side were behind at half-time, frustrated by VAR, short of clean chances, and facing a Paris FC team who looked ready to protect a serious away win. Then Florian Thauvin and Thorgan Hazard changed the game.

Paris FC led through Luca Koleosho, who scored in first-half stoppage time after an assist from Lassine Sinayoko. Lens levelled in the 63rd minute, with Thauvin scoring from Hazard’s assist. Lens completed the comeback in the 83rd minute, when Hazard scored from Thauvin’s assist.

Simple. Ruthless. A clean exchange between Lens’ two most decisive attackers.

Match story

Lens had more of the ball, more territory and more pressure. They also had the first major interruption when a penalty involving Matthieu Udol was cancelled by VAR in the 19th minute. That set the tone: Lens pushed, Paris FC absorbed, and the match became tense rather than open.

L. Rosenior’s Paris FC side had started in a 4-2-3-1 and were compact enough to slow Lens’ 3-4-2-1. Moustapha Mbow was booked in the 28th minute for a foul, then Pierre Lees-Melou followed in the 29th minute for handball, but the visitors did not lose their structure. They waited for moments rather than chasing the game.

Their moment came just before the interval. In the 45+2nd minute, Koleosho scored for Paris FC after an assist from Sinayoko. No need to dress it up: it was Paris FC’s only shot on target all night, and it put Lens under real pressure.

Paris FC made a change at half-time, with Emmanuel Mbemba replacing Koleosho. That removed their scorer from the match and suggested a more cautious second-half approach.

Lens had another VAR twist in the 51st minute, when a red-card decision involving Jean-Clair Todibo was cancelled. In the same minute, Thauvin was booked for a foul. For a few minutes, Lens looked on the edge: emotional, stretched, and not yet precise enough.

Then Toppmöller acted.

In the 61st minute, Kyllian Antonio replaced Todibo and Hazard replaced Franjo Ivanović. Two minutes later, Lens were level. Hazard assisted Thauvin in the 63rd minute, and the match changed completely.

That substitution was the turning point. Hazard gave Lens a different rhythm between the lines. Thauvin, already Lens’ most involved attacker, suddenly had a partner who could connect with him quickly and directly. Paris FC’s block was still there, but Lens had found the combination to break it.

Paris FC tried to respond in the 67th minute, with Moses Simon replacing Adama Camara and Rudy Matondo replacing Pablo Pagis. Lens then refreshed midfield in the 71st minute, when Yassine Titraoui came on for Amadou Haidara. Samson Baidoo was booked in the 74th minute, then Paris FC made another change in the 76th minute, with E. Zabi replacing Ilan Kebbal.

But the game had tilted. Lens were not overwhelming Paris FC with chances; they were beating them with quality. In the 83rd minute, Thauvin returned the favour and assisted Hazard for the winner.

Hazard entered in the 61st minute, assisted in the 63rd minute, and scored in the 83rd minute. That is the match report in one line.

Lineups and systems

Lens started in a 3-4-2-1 under D. Toppmöller:

R. Risser; R. Aguilar, S. Baidoo, J. Todibo; Saud Abdulhamid, M. Cuisance, A. Haidara, M. Udol; F. Thauvin, F. Sotoca; F. Ivanović.

Paris FC started in a 4-2-3-1 under L. Rosenior:

O. Nkambadio; A. Camara, M. Mbow, D. Coppola, Otávio; M. Lopez, P. Lees-Melou; I. Kebbal, P. Pagis, L. Koleosho; L. Sinayoko.

The tactical contrast was clear. Lens used the back three to build with width, pushing Saud Abdulhamid and Matthieu Udol into the midfield line. Paris FC held a flatter defensive shape, with Maxime Lopez and Pierre Lees-Melou screening central zones and Sinayoko working ahead as the reference point.

For much of the first half, Paris FC’s plan worked. Lens had possession but not enough clean access into the box. Florian Sotoca and Franjo Ivanović worked, but Lens lacked the final connection around Thauvin.

Hazard changed that. He did not need volume, he needed timing. His numbers tell the story: 29 minutes, one goal, one assist, one key pass and one successful dribble. He gave Lens the sharpness they had been missing.

Thauvin was the other decisive figure. He finished with one goal, one assist, two key passes, six fouls drawn, 17 duels contested and nine won. Paris FC could not get him out of the game. Even after his yellow card in the 51st minute, he stayed central to everything Lens did.

The numbers fit the eye. Lens were not spectacular, but they were superior. Paris FC were efficient before the break, then too passive after it. One shot on target away at Bollaert can win a match if the defensive work is perfect. It was not perfect once Hazard entered.

What it means

Lens move to 13 points after eight matches, sitting sixth with a +4 goal difference. More important than the table position is the run: their form now reads WWWLD, and this felt like a result that keeps them attached to the European conversation.

Paris FC remain fourth on 14 points after eight matches, also with a +4 goal difference, but this was a missed chance. Rosenior’s side had the lead, had Lens irritated, and had the game where they wanted it. Then they allowed the two players with the highest quality in the match, Thauvin and Hazard, to decide it.

For Lens, the next step is consistency. For Paris FC, the lesson is sharper: away from home, against a side with this much individual quality, control without threat is never enough.
