Lyon 2-1 Nice: Lyon go top after a four-minute first-half turn

Lyon beat Nice 2-1 on 18 October at Groupama Stadium and moved to the top of Ligue 1 after seven rounds. It was not clean. It was not comfortable. But it was clear enough: Paulo Fonseca’s side absorbed the early hit, flipped the match before half-time, then survived the final stretch after Keito Nakamura was sent off in the 70th minute.

Nice had the better volume. O. Pantaloni’s team had 52% possession, 12 shots, 9 corners and an expected goals total of 1.61. Lyon had 48% possession, 8 shots, 1 corner and 1.59 expected goals. The margins were tiny. The table impact was not.

Lyon are now 1st with 14 points and a +8 goal difference. Paris Saint Germain, Paris FC, Lille and Monaco are also on 14 points, but Lyon lead the five-team group. Nice stay 13th with 8 points, and their away record now reads three defeats from three, with 1 goal scored and 6 conceded.

The game turned in four minutes

Nice struck first in the 18th minute. Elye Wahi scored, assisted by Jonathan Clauss, and for a while the match looked exactly as Pantaloni would have wanted it: Nice using their 3-4-2-1 to stretch Lyon, Clauss giving width and delivery from the right, and Niels Nkounkou operating high on the other side despite his yellow card in the 10th minute.

Then Lyon answered with brutal efficiency.

Pavel Šulc scored in the 32nd minute. Four minutes later, Tanner Tessmann scored in the 36th minute, assisted by Zachary Athekame. No need to dress it up. Two Lyon goals, two blows, and the match had changed.

Šulc mattered because he gave Lyon a reference point in a 4-2-3-1 that could otherwise have been pinned back by Nice’s wing-backs. Tessmann mattered even more. He did not just score the winning goal, he held the centre of the match together: 2 shots, 1 goal, 6 duels won from 8, plus 1 tackle, 1 block and 1 interception. That is the full midfield package.

Fonseca’s structure held, even when the match became messy

Fonseca set Lyon up in a 4-2-3-1: R. Descamps in goal; Z. Athekame, Clinton Mata, M. Niakhaté and Abner in defence; T. Tessmann and M. Bidstrup as the base; K. Boudache, N. Nartey and J. Duranville behind P. Šulc.

Pantaloni used a 3-4-2-1: Y. Diouf in goal; Mohamed Abdelmonem, Y. Ndayishimiye and X. Mandza Tsiendi in the back three; J. Clauss, A. Witsel, H. Boudaoui and N. Nkounkou across midfield; G. Hein and M. Amoura behind E. Wahi.

The shapes explained the game. Nice had the extra centre-back and pushed the wing-backs into the game, which is why Clauss became so important. He finished with the assist, 3 key passes and 3 interceptions. Nice also forced the corner count heavily in their favour.

But Lyon had better balance in the key spaces. Athekame was decisive: the assist for Tessmann in the 36th minute, 3 tackles, 2 interceptions and 8 duels won from 11. On the other flank, Abner helped Lyon build before being replaced in the 81st minute by Ruben Kluivert.

Kail Boudache also deserves mention. He did not score, but his 3 key passes and 5 fouls drawn gave Lyon exits when Nice tried to squeeze the game after the break.

Nakamura red card changed the final phase

Fonseca made two changes in the 61st minute: Corentin Tolisso came on for Noah Teye Nartey, and Keito Nakamura came on for Julien Duranville.

Nine minutes later, Nakamura was sent off in the 70th minute for serious foul play. Lyon had to close the deal with ten men. That red card turned a controlled lead into a defensive job.

Fonseca reacted in the 75th minute by sending Felix Bacher on for Kail Boudache. Then came more protection in the 81st minute: Khalis Merah replaced Pavel Šulc, and Ruben Kluivert replaced Abner.

Nice pushed late. Pantaloni sent Alidu Seidu on for Mohamed Abdelmonem in the 81st minute, then made a triple change in the 87th minute: Sofiane Diop for Xavier Mandza Tsiendi, Morgan Sanson for Axel Witsel, and Isak Jansson for Gauthier Hein.

The late drama arrived at 90+3, when Wahi had a goal cancelled by VAR. Wahi was then booked at 90+4. Nice left with pressure, volume and frustration. Lyon left with the points.

Discipline told its own story

Nice collected four yellow cards: Niels Nkounkou in the 10th minute, Mohamed Abdelmonem in the 48th minute, Mohamed Amoura in the 65th minute and Elye Wahi at 90+4.

Lyon had no yellow cards, but the major disciplinary incident was Nakamura’s red card in the 70th minute. It forced the final 20 minutes into survival mode and made Rémy Descamps’ work matter: 3 saves, no panic, no late collapse.

What it means

Lyon’s package is now obvious: not always dominant, but efficient, resilient and dangerous through several lanes. Šulc gives them edge, Tessmann gives them authority, and Athekame gives them thrust from deep. Fonseca will like the result more than the control, especially after the red card in the 70th minute.

Nice have the opposite problem. The numbers were good enough to take something, but the table does not care. Three away matches, three defeats. Pantaloni’s 3-4-2-1 creates pressure, but Nice need cleaner defending in decisive moments and more punishment from their territorial spells.

The Ligue 1 race is compressed already. Lyon lead on goal difference, Paris Saint Germain are right there, and Marseille are trying to climb after their own statement win in Angers 2-5 Marseille. For Lyon, the next step is simple: keep banking points before the chasing group catches rhythm. For Nice, the away form needs a fix fast.
