Estac Troyes 1 - 3 Lens: Thauvin puts Lens back on track

Lens did the job on Saturday at Stade de l'Aube, and did it with enough control to make the result feel like more than a rebound. Estac Troyes 1 - 3 Lens: D. Toppmöller’s side now have back-to-back Ligue 1 wins, 10 points from seven matches, and a place back in the top-half conversation.

For Troyes, this was another damaging night. S. Dumont’s team are 17th, stuck on 4 points, with five straight league defeats and no home win from four attempts. They competed for long spells, especially through Timothee Nkada, but the margins were brutal.

Lens led through Adrien Monfray’s own goal in the 13th minute. Troyes answered through Timothee Nkada in the 26th minute. Then Florian Thauvin changed the match: he assisted Odsonne Édouard in first-half stoppage time, then set up Ruben Aguilar in the 55th minute. Once Lens had that rhythm in the final third, they had their route to three points.

How it played out

Troyes started in a 4-2-3-1 under S. Dumont: P. Beach in goal; L. Maronnier, A. Monfray, M. Diaz and P. Gozzi across the back; M. Diop and D. Karim in midfield; M. Ifnaoui, A. Mille and T. Nkada behind R. Ripart.

Lens, under D. Toppmöller, used a 3-4-2-1: R. Risser in goal; K. Antonio, I. Ganiou and J. Todibo as the back three; R. Aguilar, Y. Titraoui, A. Bulatović and M. SkĂłraƛ across midfield; F. Thauvin and F. Sotoca behind O. Édouard.

The shape mattered. Lens had 59% possession and 540 passes, using the extra centre-back and midfield width to keep Troyes in longer defensive phases. But Troyes were not passive. Their 12 shots, 5 on target and 1.27 expected goals told the truth: this was not a collapse, it was a failure to survive the decisive moments.

The first came in the 13th minute, when Adrien Monfray’s own goal put Lens ahead. No dressing it up, no mythology needed: Lens were in front, Troyes were chasing.

Nkada brought Troyes level in the 26th minute, a goal that reflected his influence. He was the home side’s sharpest player, finishing with 4 shots, 2 on target, 1 key pass and the goal. His rating of 8.0 was not cosmetic. He gave Lens problems because he carried threat with limited service.

Then came the key passage of the match.

Thauvin assisted Édouard in the 45+2nd minute, just before the interval. That goal changed the emotional balance. Troyes had recovered from the early own goal, only to go in behind. For a side already carrying four league defeats in a row before kick-off, that was heavy.

In the 55th minute, Thauvin assisted Aguilar. Lens led 3-1, and the match moved onto their terms.

Thauvin was the difference

Thauvin was not just involved. He ran the attacking contract.

He finished with 2 assists and 6 key passes in 67 minutes. That is the central fact of the game. Lens had only 3 shots on target from 13 attempts, yet scored three times, including the own goal. Efficiency was the story, but Thauvin supplied the quality behind it.

Édouard mattered because his goal in the 45+2nd minute restored Lens control at the worst possible time for Troyes. Aguilar mattered because his goal in the 55th minute ended the argument. From wing-back, Aguilar also produced 4 shots, 1 on target and 2 blocks before making way in the 72nd minute.

At the other end, Risser’s 4 saves should not be lost in the scoreline. Troyes forced Lens to defend their lead, and Risser gave D. Toppmöller the platform to manage the final half-hour.

Substitutions and control

Lens moved first in the 60th minute: S. Baidoo replaced J. Todibo.

Troyes also changed in the 60th minute, with K. Diawara replacing T. Nkada. That substitution removed Troyes’ scorer and most dangerous attacker, though Diawara did bring direct running, completing 2 dribbles from 2 attempts.

S. Dumont then sent on Noah Donkor for P. Gozzi in the 64th minute.

D. Toppmöller responded with a triple change in the 67th minute: M. Soares replaced F. Thauvin, F. Ivanović replaced O. Édouard, and A. Haidara replaced Y. Titraoui. That was the green light to protect the lead while keeping legs up front.

Saud Abdulhamid replaced R. Aguilar in the 72nd minute. Troyes made two late changes in the 79th minute: J. Le Douaron replaced M. Diop, and I. Gomis replaced L. Maronnier.

The match grew scrappy late. M. Diaz was booked in the 76th minute for a foul. R. Ripart was booked in the 76th minute for dissent. S. Baidoo was booked in the 77th minute for a foul. A. Haidara was booked in the 82nd minute for a foul.

What it means

Lens climb to 7th with 10 points, close enough to the European places to make this run matter. After the turbulence of three defeats in seven league games, two straight wins are not just points. They are proof of direction.

The top of Ligue 1 remains tight. Paris Saint Germain lead on 14 points after their own away win, covered here: Strasbourg 1 - 3 Paris Saint Germain: Dembélé changes the deal late at La Meinau. Paris FC, sitting above Lens before their next match, also have a chance to shift the picture in the upper pack: Paris FC Eye Leapfrog Chance as Rennes Visit in Top-Five Clash.

For Troyes, the table is already uncomfortable. Seventeenth, 4 points, 16 goals conceded in seven matches. The next brief for S. Dumont is clear: stop the run, tighten the box, and find a way to keep Nkada involved for longer. For Lens, the timeline is cleaner. Thauvin is fit, productive, and central. If that continues, D. Toppmöller has a real platform.
