Southampton 1 - 4 West Ham: Ajala double flips cup tie as Nuno’s bench finishes the job

West Ham are through in the League Cup, Round of 64. Southampton are out. Simple as that.

At St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday night, S. Rusk’s side had the ball, the early lead and enough passing control to make this a contest. Nuno Espírito Santo’s West Ham had the better chances, the sharper runners and, once the game opened, the stronger bench. Final score: Southampton 1 - 4 West Ham.

Léo Scienza gave Southampton the lead in the 10th minute, but Joshua Ajala changed the direction of the tie with goals in the 41st minute and 53rd minute. Then Nuno sent on the senior power. Valentín Castellanos scored in the 75th minute, assisted by Joël Veltman. Jarrod Bowen scored in the 84th minute, assisted by Lewis Orford. Deal done.

The match

Southampton began with control and an early reward. Scienza scored in the 10th minute, giving St. Mary’s the sort of cup-night lift that can unsettle a rotated Premier League opponent.

But the warning signs came quickly. Southampton kept possession, yet West Ham carried the cleaner threat. The visitors finished with 18 total shots, 8 on target and 14 from inside the box. That tells the story. Nuno’s side did not need dominance of the ball. They needed access to the penalty area.

Southampton’s night also became more awkward through discipline. Cameron Bragg was booked in the 26th minute for a foul. Scienza followed with a yellow card in the 34th minute, also for a foul. The scorer had been Southampton’s spark, but by the hour he was gone.

The equaliser came in the 41st minute. Ajala scored for West Ham, assisted by Orford. It was the key swing before half-time: Southampton’s early work cancelled, West Ham’s young midfield suddenly with a clear route into the match.

Ajala then scored again in the 53rd minute. No assist was listed, but the importance was obvious. West Ham had gone from chasing the tie to managing it. Ajala finished with two shots on target and two goals. That is the cleanest package possible for a forward or attacking midfielder trying to force his way into Nuno’s plans.

Lineups and shape

The official lineup feed did not list formations for either side.

Southampton, coached by S. Rusk, started with Daniel Peretz in goal; James Bree, N. Wood-Gordon, Jack Stephens and Welington in defence; Romeo Akachukwu, Cameron Bragg and Léo Scienza in midfield; Tom Fellows, Divin Mubama and Lewis Dobbin in attack.

With formations not supplied, the pattern still looked clear from the personnel. Southampton wanted circulation and width, especially through Welington and Tom Fellows. West Ham were happier to break rhythm, attack the box and let Orford connect phases rather than simply recycle possession.

Orford mattered. He finished with two assists, six key passes, 63 total passes and 57 accurate passes. He assisted Ajala in the 41st minute and Bowen in the 84th minute. For a West Ham midfield that did not have most of the ball, that was elite efficiency.

Nuno’s 59th-minute reset

The decisive managerial move came in the 59th minute.

Nuno made four changes at once: Arne Engels replaced Mohamadou Kanté, Jarrod Bowen replaced Keiber Lamadrid, Manor Solomon replaced Joshua Ajala and Valentín Castellanos replaced Joël Piroe.

It was a proper green light from the bench. Ajala had already done the damage, so Nuno protected the result by adding fresh senior edge rather than sitting on it.

Southampton responded in the 60th minute with three changes: Flynn Downes replaced Cameron Bragg, Samuel Edozie replaced Léo Scienza and Kuryu Matsuki replaced Tom Fellows. Later, Finn Azaz replaced Romeo Akachukwu in the 66th minute, and Cyle Larin replaced Lewis Dobbin in the 79th minute.

The issue was not effort. Edozie brought direct running and had one shot on target. Matsuki added a key pass. Downes helped keep the ball. But Southampton were already losing the most important battle: West Ham’s attacks were reaching better areas.

Castellanos scored in the 75th minute, assisted by Veltman, whose night was quietly excellent: one assist, five key passes, four tackles and seven duels won from eight. Then Bowen scored in the 84th minute, with Orford again providing the assist. Bowen had been on the pitch since the 59th minute and still produced two shots on target, one goal and a reminder of the difference senior quality makes in these ties.

West Ham’s final change came in the 87th minute, when Kaelan Casey replaced Divine Mukasa.

Match numbers

Southampton completed more passes and had more of the ball. West Ham created more danger. That is the report in one line.

What it means

For Southampton, this was a warning. Rusk’s side had structure, passed well and led early, but the game ran away once West Ham found rhythm around the box. Scienza gave them the start. The collective could not give him a platform after that.

For West Ham, this was exactly the kind of cup night Nuno will take: minutes for young players, goals for Ajala, influence from Orford, and decisive impact from Bowen and Castellanos. Ajala’s double will travel back to east London with him. Orford’s two assists should matter too.
