Auxerre beat Nice 2-1 last night at Stade de l'Abbé Deschamps, a direct hit in the relegation fight that nudges Christophe Pélissier's side above Claude Puel's men and out of the relegation play-off on goal difference.
Nice, set up by Puel in a 5-4-1, struck first. Sofiane Diop scored in the 9th minute after Auxerre failed to clear, a reminder of how fragile the hosts can look when the wingbacks are allowed to advance. Pélissier, working from his usual 4-3-3, lost Bryan Okoh moments later and had to summon Clément Akpa in the 13th minute, a disruption that forced the back line to reshuffle instantly.
Auxerre steadied themselves through midfield duels. Sékou Mara equalised in the 27th minute, the centre forward picking his spot after Auxerre compressed the pitch and forced a turnover. That goal settled the home team. Naouirou Ahamada, Elisha Owusu, and Kévin Danois were more aggressive on second balls, flipping momentum despite an xG of only 0.72.
Claude Puel reacted with a double change in the 59th minute, introducing Ali Abdi and Tom Louchet to give width and fresher legs. Later, Elye Wahi and Kevin Carlos came on in the 76th minute after Mohamed-Ali Cho and Morgan Sanson departed, with orders to stretch the pitch on the break. Nice produced 1.23 expected goals but could not find a second breakthrough, and once Sofiane Diop was withdrawn for Isak Jansson in the 81st minute they lost their sharpest dribbler between the lines.
The decisive moment belonged to Lassine Sinayoko. In the 70th minute he finished a move created by Ahamada's forward pass, a simple action but exactly what Auxerre needed: wide forward cutting inside, midfield runner releasing at the right time. Marvin Senaya came on in the 71st minute to lock down the flank, and the late double substitution at 86 minutes (Josué Casimir for Mara, Mamoudou Cissokho for Danny Namaso) signalled full game management mode. Casimir then collected a yellow card for time wasting in the 90+5th minute, the only booking of the night.
Auxerre's midfield numbers underline the swing. Danois won eight of 14 duels, Owusu seven of 13, Ahamada five of six, while Donovan Léon made two important saves to preserve the lead. Nice actually generated more on target attempts (six) but failed to convert pressure into points.
Stats:
- Possession: Auxerre 52 percent, Nice 48 percent
- Shots on target: Auxerre 4, Nice 6
- Corners: Auxerre 10, Nice 1
- Expected goals: Auxerre 0.72, Nice 1.23
The table tightens because of it. Auxerre climb to 31 points, level with Nice but ahead on goal difference, which lifts them out of the relegation play-off place for now. Nice remain on 31 points and stuck in that play-off position, their form now reading LDDDD with Puel still searching for a reliable front line. Auxerre must consolidate when they travel next week, while Nice need a plan before heading into a critical run-in, otherwise that relegation play-off will become their only route to safety.
