Canada were held to a goalless draw by Tunisia at BMO Field, with Jesse Marsch’s side unable to find a breakthrough against Sabri Trabelsi’s organised 4-3-3.
The hosts lined up with Niko Sigur, Joel Waterman, Ralph Priso and Richie Laryea shielding Maxime Crépeau, while Ismael Koné linked Nathan-Dylan Saliba and Marcelo Flores behind Jonathan David, Tani Oluwaseyi and Liam Millar. Priso departed in the 26th minute for Kamal Miller, and the first-half rhythm was punctured by bookings for Elias Saad in the 28th minute and Oluwaseyi a minute later.
Trabelsi reshaped at the break by introducing Sebastian Tounekti for Louey Ben Farhat and Khalil Ayari for Sayfallah Ltaief, with Ayari cautioned moments after coming on. Ellyes Skhiri, Ali Abdi and Anis Ben Slimane tightened Tunisia’s midfield lane, forcing David to seek space in the channels, and Waterman went into the book in the 54th minute.
Marsch responded on 58 minutes by sending on Daniel Jebbison, Jonathan Osorio and Derek Cornelius for Oluwaseyi, Saliba and Waterman, pushing Koné deeper while allowing Flores to stay closer to David. Trabelsi answered immediately, turning to Rayan Elloumi, Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida and Mohamed Belhadj Mahmoud, and Rani Khedira was effective until Ismael Gharbi replaced him in the 70th minute. Abdelmouhib Chamakh remained composed behind a reshaped defence, with Omar Rekik organising the back line.
Millar collected Canada’s third caution in the 74th minute before Marsch deployed a four-man change on 76 minutes, introducing Ali Ahmed, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, Junior Hoilett and Jacen Russell-Rowe for Flores, Laryea, Millar and David. Firas Chaouat replaced Alaa Ghram in the 86th minute to keep Tunisia’s front line fresh, and Hoilett received a yellow card in the second minute of stoppage time as the contest drifted toward stalemate.
Koné remained Canada’s chief organiser but the hosts lacked width after Laryea’s withdrawal, leaving Tunisia with a creditable away draw as Trabelsi’s rebuild progresses.
