Como 4 - 1 Manchester United: Nico Paz runs the show as United collapse by the lake

Como 4, Manchester United 1. That is the line from Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia on October 21, and it lands hard.

Cesc Fàbregas had the cleaner plan, the sharper players, and the man who decided the night: Nico Paz. Two goals, one assist, four shots on target, and the authority to make a Champions League fixture feel like Como’s property from the 2nd minute.

Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, had more shots overall, 13 to 11, but the detail tells the truth. Eight of United’s efforts came from outside the box. Como had eight shots on goal. United had four. Como played with control, then punished every gap.

The result moves Como to 6 points from three league stage matches, 9th in the table and firmly inside the play-off places. United remain on 3 points, 20th, with two defeats from three and a worrying away record: two away games, two defeats, one goal scored, six conceded.

The story

Como started in a 4-2-3-1 under Cesc Fàbregas and hit first almost immediately. Nico Paz scored in the 2nd minute, assisted by Lucas Da Cunha, and that early goal changed the temperature of the match.

United were also in a 4-2-3-1 under Michael Carrick, but they never looked settled after falling behind. Bruno Fernandes started as the central forward, with Bryan Mbeumo, Youri Tielemans and Matheus Cunha behind him. Mason Mount and Andrey Santos formed the double pivot. On paper, there was enough craft. On the pitch, there was not enough control.

Andrey Santos was booked in the 25th minute for a foul, and Carrick moved at the break. Amad Diallo came on for Matheus Cunha in the 45th minute. Carlos Baleba replaced Andrey Santos in the 45th minute. The message was obvious: more running, more thrust, more bite.

It did not work.

Anastasios Douvikas scored in the 49th minute, assisted by Nico Paz. One minute later, Carlos Baleba was booked in the 50th minute for a foul. United’s reset had lasted four minutes before Como had doubled the lead and United had another midfielder on a yellow card.

Then Paz scored again in the 57th minute. No need for decoration. No need to invent a finish. It was simply the goal that broke United’s night.

Fàbregas then managed the game with calm. Maxence Caqueret replaced Martin Baturina in the 64th minute. Carrick sent on Joshua Zirkzee for Bruno Fernandes in the 67th minute. Como answered with Kaiki replacing Lucas Da Cunha in the 69th minute.

That change mattered. Kaiki assisted Jacobo Ramón in the 76th minute for Como’s fourth. Substitute on, contribution made, deal done.

United made further changes: Harry Amass replaced Matthijs De Ligt in the 79th minute, and Shea Lacey came on for Bryan Mbeumo in the 86th minute. Como made three changes in the 80th minute: Alberto Dossena for Maximo Perrone, Samuele Ricci for Nico Paz, and Ivan Smolčić for Yan Couto.

Marc-Oliver Kempf was booked in the 84th minute. Shea Lacey was booked in the 86th minute. Joshua Zirkzee scored United’s consolation in stoppage time, at 90+1, assisted by Amad Diallo.

Too late. Far too late.

Why Como won it

Como’s 4-2-3-1 had balance. Maximo Perrone and Luis Milla gave Fàbregas a passing platform, while Martin Baturina, Nico Paz and Lucas Da Cunha worked behind Anastasios Douvikas. The structure was not complicated. It was just clear.

Paz was the difference. He scored in the 2nd minute, assisted Douvikas in the 49th minute, then scored again in the 57th minute. His individual numbers back up the eye test: 4 shots, 4 on target, 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 successful dribbles from 5 attempts, and 8 duels won from 16.

Baturina also mattered before his withdrawal in the 64th minute. He made 3 key passes, the highest total of any Como player. He gave Paz and Douvikas service between United’s lines and helped Como keep United’s midfield facing their own goal too often.

Lucas Da Cunha set the tone with the assist for Paz in the 2nd minute. Kaiki then gave Como fresh impact from the bench, assisting Jacobo Ramón in the 76th minute after coming on in the 69th minute.

At the back, Jacobo Ramón did more than score. He completed 88 accurate passes from 95 total, won 6 of 10 duels, and added the fourth goal. That is a centre-back performance with weight.

Why United lost control

United’s shape matched Como’s on the board, but not in the game.

Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 had Simon Lammens in goal; Diogo Dalot, Matthijs De Ligt, Harry Maguire and Noussair Mazraoui across the back; Mason Mount and Andrey Santos in midfield; Bryan Mbeumo, Youri Tielemans and Matheus Cunha behind Bruno Fernandes.

The problem was access. United had 45% possession and 545 passes, but too much of it lacked threat. They finished with 13 shots, yet only 4 were on goal and 8 came from outside the box. That is usually a sign of a team being kept at arm’s length.

Amad Diallo was the best United attacker after coming on in the 45th minute. He assisted Joshua Zirkzee at 90+1, had 3 shots, 2 on target, made 2 key passes, completed 5 successful dribbles from 9 attempts, and won 8 of 14 duels. He changed the tempo, but by then Como had already taken the match where they wanted it.

Zirkzee also did his job after replacing Bruno Fernandes in the 67th minute. One shot, one shot on target, one goal at 90+1. It was not enough to alter the result, but it was one of the few clean United actions of the night.

The broader issue is now obvious. United have lost both away matches in this league stage. Their form reads LLW after three games. The table still offers a route through, but the margin is shrinking.

What it means

Como are now 9th with 6 points, a +5 goal difference, and serious momentum after three league stage matches. Their home form is becoming a problem opponents will not enjoy: two home games, two wins, eight goals scored.

United are 20th with 3 points and a -1 goal difference. The Champions League format gives them time, but not comfort. Carrick needs a response quickly, because the away numbers are already ugly.

Elsewhere in the same round, the table is tightening fast: Club Brugge KV beat Lens 3 - 0, while Arsenal drew with Bayern München. United cannot afford many more nights like this.

For Como, the next step is clear: keep Paz fit, keep the structure intact, and this Champions League campaign has real legs. For United, the evidence is less flattering: another away defeat, another tactical question, another urgent meeting for Carrick before the next fixture.
