Sunderland 0-2 Arsenal: Bruno Guimarães changes the game as Arsenal stay perfect

Arsenal left the Stadium of Light with a 2-0 win on 12 September, and with the look of a side that knows how to take a match when the door opens. Not spectacular for long stretches. Not loose either. Mikel Arteta’s team absorbed Sunderland’s best moment, survived Enzo Le Fée’s missed penalty in the 56th minute, then punished them two minutes later through Bruno Guimarães.

In the 58th minute, Bruno Guimarães scored for Arsenal, with Declan Rice providing the assist. No need to dress it up. The timing was brutal. Sunderland had gone from possible control to chasing Arsenal in the space of two minutes.

That is what elite sides do. They do not always dominate every phase, but they know when to land the punch.

Why Bruno mattered

Bruno Guimarães was the decisive change. Arteta acted at half-time, sending him on for Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Arsenal immediately had a different edge in midfield. Bruno played 45 minutes and finished with a goal, two shots, one on target, four duels won from six and no fouls committed.

His contribution was not just the goal in the 58th minute. It was the balance he gave Arsenal after the break. Rice had already been Arsenal’s most secure passer, finishing with 68 passes, 59 accurate, three key passes and the assist. With Bruno alongside him, Arsenal had more snap, more authority and a better platform for Saka and Ødegaard.

M. Ødegaard did not score, but he shaped much of Arsenal’s work between the lines. Five key passes, 42 total passes and five duels won from six told the story of a captain who kept asking questions. Saka supplied the finishing line with his penalty in the 90+7th minute, after carrying Arsenal’s biggest direct threat: four shots, three on target, four fouls drawn and one goal.

Sunderland had enough to make it awkward

This was not a passive home performance. Sunderland had 12 shots to Arsenal’s 11, seven from inside the box, four corners and 42 percent possession. Le Fée had three shots and two key passes. Granit Xhaka was their most influential player, with 57 passes, 49 accurate, three key passes and two successful dribbles from three.

Nordi Mukiele also became a curious attacking outlet, taking four shots and putting one on target, while Thomas Meunier had three shots before being replaced by Malick Fofana in the 76th minute.

But Sunderland’s problem was discipline and precision. Arsenal remain first, with 12 points from four matches, four wins from four, a goal difference of +7 and only one goal conceded. Manchester City sit three points behind having played one fewer match, so nobody at Arsenal will be declaring anything in September. But this was another title-race result: away from home, under pressure, clean sheet, three points.

Sunderland stay 14th on four points from four games. Their form now reads LDWL, and this will sting because the match offered them a route. Le Fée’s missed penalty in the 56th minute was the fork in the road. Bruno Guimarães made sure Arsenal chose the direction.

For Arteta, the takeaway is clear: his bench changed the game, Rice remains central to the entire package, and Saka is still the man trusted to finish the job. For R.
